But the acetone-based remover works much faster, so will be in contact with the skin for a shorter period of time than the non-acetone based removers. It’s a trade-off because even the gentler non-acetone based polish removers are not kind to skin.

2. Shape Nails: Clip your nails, if necessary. Then if needed, gently file them into a shape as you desire. A slightly rounded nail shape or square-rounded edge are by and large the preferred ones.

Tip: I usually fancy rounded-nails (mirroring the shape of my cuticles), which extend just over the edges of the fingertips, and believe me they look elegant.

After shaping, smoothen the tops and sides of the nails using a slightly abrasive buffer. Purpose is to make the nails surface even, but keep in mind that if you buff the nails too smooth, the polish won’t stick, and can actually slip right away also.


(i) Before filing make sure your nails are completely dry (filing wet nails can cause splitting).

(ii) Avoid using metal or extremely coarse nail files as they can splinter your nails. Instead go for a gently abrasive emery board or crystal nail file.

3. Soak Your Nails: Ahh…. time for real spa feeling now! Apply a rich hand cream. Now soak your hands in a bowl of warm (not too hot) water well mixed with a little bit of your gentle face cleanser or shampoo. Soaking the cuticles before trimming is essential, but beware too much soaking can in fact damage your skin and nails. Thus limit the soaking time up to 2-3 minutes only.

Natural Beauty Tip: Once you are through with soaking of your hands, you can apply a gentle face scrub or exfoliant (you can use natural hand scrub (read here for homemade hand scrub recipes ), and scrub your hands. You can also use a brush to clean your nails. Scrubbing and exfoliating will get rid of the dead skin from your hands. Rinse your hands with clean water and then pat them dry.

4. Clean And Trim The Cuticles: Cuticles are the soft skin at the bottom of your nails where the fingernail cartilage and skin meet. Apply a little bit of cuticle remover. Let it sit on the cuticle area only for a few seconds. Then, using a cuticle pusher, gently push your cuticles back away from the nails. But don’t push too far because it can damage nails growth or fray the cuticles.

Caution: Make sure not to pull, lift, tear, rip, force, or cut into the cuticles in any way. Take care not to clip into the cuticles; just nip off the free edges with a pair of metal cuticle nippers. We strictly advise not to overdo this step, rather under-do it as the cuticles protect you from all sorts of infections.

Tip: Check if you have hangnails around the sides of any of your nails. If so, carefully remove them, but again, be careful not to cut into the nail itself or to cut into the skin too deeply.

5. MoisturizeMassage a rich creamy moisturizer or silky oil into the cuticles and all over the hands to hydrate and replenish skin. Alternatively, you can use any oil of your choice.

6. Prep For Nail Polish: This step is optional as you may or may not want to apply a nail polish. If you intend to compliment your nails with some beautiful color then follow this procedure:

First you need to make sure that there is no moisturizing ingredient left on your nails because it will prevent polish from adhering properly. Using a cotton swab or pad, apply nail-polish remover over the nail’s surface to remove any residue. Try to avoid getting remover on the cuticles as it’s good to keep that area moisturized. But don’t worry if you do, because you’re going to apply moisturizer on your nails again once the polish is dry.

Tip: Make sure that your nails have absolutely nothing oily or emollient left on them.

7. Time To Glam Your Nails With Nail Polish In Layers:

(i) If your nails are weak or brittle, it is a good idea to use a base coat of ridge-filling nail polish to shore up the nail. Alternatively, you can use a transparent nail polish as a base coat. (a) A fan helps to dry out fast, but don’t put your nails too close to the fan’s airflow or you’ll end up with bubbles in your polish.

(ii) Make sure not to steam your face longer than 10 minutes. Stop sooner if your skin feels uncomfortable or if you have sensitive skin or acne. If you are suffering from acne or other skin issues, steaming for a longer time can aggravate the acne conditions.

7. Wipe Your Face: After steaming, the debris and impurities are loosened and become soft. This is the perfect time to eliminate them. Either you can use a cool washcloth to remove them and close your pores or use a clay mask. Smooth clay mask over your face and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Wash it away with warm water and pat your face dry with a towel.

(ii) First, pour the mixture through a mesh strainer to remove most of the coconut solids. Then squeeze through several thicknesses of cheesecloth to make sure you get all the liquid out, removing remaining pieces of coconut.

(iii) Place the coconut back in the blender with another cup of hot water, and repeat this process 3 more times.

Voila! Your own approximately 4 cups of homemade coconut milk is ready!

On its official website, the first thing we read about Photoshop is “Redesign reality”. And then, “If you can imagine it, you can do it thanks to Photoshop.” Mobile apps and web apps may have taken away some of the limelight, but Adobe Photoshop is still the king of photo retouching and is a reference and standard for amateurs and professionals.

Currently it is available by subscription , and the Photoshop family consists of several programs and mobile and desktop applications, a necessary update in the current times, where smartphones and tablets are as or more powerful than our computer to process images and touch up photographs.

The history of Photoshop follows the pattern of other great products. A good idea that is carried out in practice and gives rise to a program that will change everything. A great company that recognizes talent and decides to buy that project. A community that will give you support for years. And the rest, we’ve seen it in the first person if you’ve ever worked with Photoshop or messed with it.

Let’s see how this tool of design and digital retouching was born , how were its first versions and what new digital photography changed and made it possible for anyone to retouch images without getting into a dark room without using scissors and duct tape.

Two brothers, an idea

Thomas Knoll was a student at the University of Michigan when he began writing on his Macintosh Plus a program that would display grayscale images on monochrome monitors . His name was Display, it was 1987 and when he saw his brother John, who at that time worked nothing more and nothing less than Industrial Light & Magic, recommended Thomas to be more ambitious and schedule him to be a graphic editor and not only an image viewer.

During 1988, the Knoll brothers devoted all their time and effort to Display, renamed by Thomas himself as ImagePro and later Photoshop. The thing was serious, to the point that Thomas temporarily stopped his studies and managed to sell Photoshop to the scanner maker Barneyscan, which distributed copies of the program with his product . This version of Photoshop, the 0.87, was distributed with the name of Barneyscan XP.

From a black and white image viewer to a graphic editor accompanying a scanner. Next stop? Silicon Valley John Knoll showed Photoshop to Apple engineers and Adobe art director Russell Brown. In both cases, the presentation was a success but Brown went ahead and decided to buy the license to distribute Photoshop .

In the following months, the Thomas brothers worked to improve their program. John wrote the first plugins while Thomas was still writing code of the main program.

In February of 1990, Photoshop 1.0 goes on sale under the umbrella of Adobe and as an exclusive for the Macintosh platform. In 2013, its source code was donated to the Computer History Museum . It was not until version 2.5 of November of 1992 that Photoshop was present also for Windows.

The own page of the Computer History Museum says that in ten years more than 3 million copies of Photoshop were sold .

A promising future

The union of Adobe and Photoshop has remained to this day since that first agreement in April 1989 when Adobe art director Russell Brown saw how promising that image editing program was.

And while Photoshop 1.0 and 2.0 had two unique developers working on it, the Knoll brothers themselves, it soon became apparent that Photoshop would become an important pillar of a giant such as Adobe.

Magic wand . The tools of selection of Photoshop have always been a great success, since they allow to choose an element to eliminate it, to copy it or to alter it by means of filters and effects. Magnetic Lasso . Introduced in 1998 in Adobe Photoshop 5.0, the magnetic loop was the most advanced selection tool until the arrival of the magic wand. By marking contact points you could surround an element to edit it independently of the rest of the image.

Effects and filters . What would Instagram be without the filters? Any self-respecting mobile application related to photography has effects to apply to an image. But everything started with Photoshop and already in its first versions had simple effects that over the years have expanded with complex effect and very successful.

Layers . It is not easy to say which Photoshop tool is the most revolutionary, but it is clear that if we could only choose a few, the layers or layers would be one of them. Introduced in 1994 with Photoshop 3.0, the layers allow to separate elements to be edited separately or to apply effects manually manipulating layers with the same image.

Clone buffer . Already present in Photoshop 1.0 (1990), over the years this tool has been improved to clone not only patterns or flat colors but also tonalities and the entire spectrum of color.
