You can buy and use branded coconut milk, but they are expensive and moreover who knows what they contain actually – such as preservatives, sweeteners, etc. So a few months back I decided to try my hand at making my own coconut milk for using in my hair and skin care regimes. I experimented for many days and after a lot of trial-and-error, I came up with the following perfect recipe of homemade coconut milk. This simple DIY coconut milk recipe is not only without any preservatives and additives but very inexpensive and easy to make also.

Why Coconut Milk?

Coconut milk is packed with medium chain fatty acids and lauric acid. It has many benefits for hair and skin.

How To Make Coconut Milk At Home?

You will need:

(i) Shredded coconut: 1/2 cup, organic & unsweetened (Get Here Organic, Unsweetened Shredded Coconut)

(ii) Hot water

Method:

(i) Put the shredded coconut into your blender or food processor and add the hot water. Pulse the mixture for 20 times until you get thick and creamy mixture, rather than running the blender continuously.

(ii) First, pour the mixture through a mesh strainer to remove most of the coconut solids. Then squeeze through several thicknesses of cheesecloth to make sure you get all the liquid out, removing remaining pieces of coconut.

(iii) Place the coconut back in the blender with another cup of hot water, and repeat this process 3 more times.

Voila! Your own approximately 4 cups of homemade coconut milk is ready!

Note: Since there are no preservatives or fillers, the “cream” of the coconut milk may separate on the top if stored in the fridge. Just shake or stir before using.
